I drove a SXS or UTV thing a few weeks ago it was a canam and had lots of power and fox shocks and crap. It was a lot of fun but $15-30k is not fun. I think that is too much money and a auto based thing could be just as fun for like $5k or so.

What would you build or buy for cheap off road madness?

maybe a exocet with much lift? or how about a locost made for offroad? Or a wrangler and lots more throttle application and bravery?

Kinja'd!!!

my income bracket allows me to build a go kart so I think I will start there.

I’d start with a compact 4x4 like a Samurai or something and then end there.

a samurai is almost smaller than most SXS, probably will last longer too. cheaper to repair

For something like this you probably want to buy someone else’s project, ideally finished.

That way you have:

Someone else to blame,

The cost of any expensive speed parts already amortized and depreciated,

A working vehicle from day zero so it doesn’t become garage furniture until you break something on it

As you fix it, it will become yours, so the concern about “built it with my own two hands” becomes less and less prevalent as time goes on. Maybe fart a rattlecan of paint onto it if that helps.

Find a rusty Subaru and build a cage around the drivetrain.

Pull a fred williams and buy an early fj80 (about 3 grand for a decent one) pull off the bumpers, get a lift kit and add large tires. You can go all rednecky with a truggy if you so please.

Kinja'd!!!

Bonus points: Not having to tow/park a trailer.

Electric golf cart. Electric because of the torques. Golf cart because lightweight and already UTV-like.

Something like this? Maybe same idea but based on a Miata or something else small and rear wheel drive. Yes this one is set up for road, but same idea and off road wouldn’t be that much different.

Ha, this is something I’m semi seriously working on for a farm project- basically a copy of this:

Kinja'd!!!

We’ve had three UTVs, but they are way underbuilt for actual work. CVT issues with all, and the current one that is marketed as a ‘heavy duty’ model uses Moped brakes. Not so good on the steep hills we have! It’s currently laid up with a suspected head gasket failure and a myriad of other things that need sorting, so for expediency we picked up a Daihatsu Terios for next to nothing.

It’s being used as is for now, but it’s almost ideal. You could do something similar with most small SUVs, this place also does KIAs. Lightness goes a long way.

It’s a first gen so they’re pretty cheap now, blue book on mine is only about 3 grand. It’s heavy as hell tho (around 3200 pounds) so jumping is not so good. Man I had some serious oppo going at the last rally tho

All of these answers are wrong, on the basis that none of them actually truly fit the term ‘poverty-spec’.

The correct answer is what I plan to do (eventually).

Back in 2013 we had a big storm over christmas time that brought down a big oak in our garden. Amongst lots of other damage, it took down a marquee we were using to store junk after our house move.

This has left me with a load of thinwall poor-quality steel tubing that isn’t really useful for anything at all.

So, the plan is to weld it all up like a Maserati Birdcage built by rednecks, strap any cheap motorcycle engine I can find to it along with whatever suspension components are left over from my Spitfire projects and go hooning :)
